Christine Grimshire, Academic Coordinator - TOEFL Instructor

Chris is the academic coordinator at CLLC specializing in academic English and exam preparation. She holds a BA English (magna cum laude) from Fitchburg State College, a post-baccalaureate diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language from Simon Fraser University, and a Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education from the University of Victoria. She is also an ETS-certified TOEFL instructor. Chris is presently working on a Masters in Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University. Her area of research is overcoming affective (emotional) barriers to learning in adults. Check out her room at CLLC with the comfy chair.

 

 

Rebecca Martin, English Instructor

Rebecca holds a B.A. from Mount Allison University in Anthropology, CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) and English Literature, which provided her with the wonderful opportunity of conducting an independent cultural study in Hangzhou, China. Throughout her life, Rebecca has enjoyed helping and teaching people in a variety of ways. She has held various positions in the Canadian Red Cross, from Water Safety and Canoeing instructor to Program Director. Within these positions she taught and counseled all ages. Her passion for travel has allowed her to work with different cultural backgrounds. She has lived and worked in the U.S.A., China, Korea, and New Zealand. Rebecca's interests include traveling, music, reading, writing, painting, laughing…and teaching of course

 

 

Mike Murray, English Instructor

Mike, who graduated from Dalhousie University in 2001,began his ESL teaching career in Korea, where he taught with his wife in 2004/2005. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Central America, Asia, and North America. His interests include swimming, surfing, playing guitar and harmonica, and meeting people from around the world. His life philosophies include: "You have friends because you are a friend,"and "A great teacher is a student; a great student is a teacher."

 

 

Jason Stuyt, English Instructor

After 'graduating with distinction' from McMaster University (Ontario) with a Combined Honours BA in English and History, Jason is currently completing his MA in Adult Education at Mount Saint Vincent University (Nova Scotia). Jason has been schooled in grammar by some of Canada's greatest grammarians including Joanne Buckley, and he has had essays published in academic journals. For over six years, Jason has taught ESL to immigrants and international students at various schools including Dalhousie University and McMaster University. Jason has also taken language courses in French, Spanish, and Japanese, and he has traveled greatly abroad. Jason enjoys music, art, theatre and sports. He has become skilled at communicating in cross-cultural settings, and he is proficient at creating interesting and challenging lessons that keep students stimulated.

 

  Derrick Tobin, English Instructor

Derrick completed a double-major Bachelor of Science degree from St. Mary’s University/Dalhousie University in Psychology and Biology. After 4 years of traveling and teaching snowboarding in Banff, Alberta, and Whistler, BC, Derrick obtained his TESOL certificate at the Atlantic Overseas Teaching Institute in Halifax. He ventured to Thailand where he taught in a semi-private children’s school with 3000 students, and developed a permanent curriculum for 6 schools in the country. It was during this time that he realized teaching English was his chosen profession. Upon returning to Canada, Derrick spent a summer teaching and farming with foreign workers through Frontier College in Toronto. Along with teaching at one of Vancouver’s most prominent ESL schools for 2 years, he took these experiences and returned to his birthplace and family in Halifax. Derrick spends his spare time playing guitar, fire dancing, writing, running and traveling.

David Fielding, Director of Studies

David has an Honors degree from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and an MBA from the University of Lancaster, one of the leading business schools in UK. David currently holds the position of Director of Studies at CLLC. He is dedicated, approachable and cares respectably for the progress and success of each student. David is a CELTA qualified teacher who has recently returned to teaching and academic administration after a successful career in business. His business career included 10 years in a management consultancy role with a UK central government organization and 20 years with a major international bank in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong he was also the external examiner for a B.Sc. course at Hong Kong Polytechnic. Prior to his business career David was a teacher in Hong Kong and Uganda for several years.

 

   
  Heddy Johnson, Administrative Manager

Heddy is an Art and Sciences graduate from Mount Allison University, in Sackville, New Brunswick. Since graduation, Heddy has worked in several countries teaching English as a second language to all levels of fluency from young children to business professionals. For the four years prior to working at CLLC, she worked as a flight attendant for WestJet Airlines, one of Canada’s two major air carriers. Throughout all areas of her work experience, Heddy has enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, and continues to do so at CLLC. Having this experience as administrative Manager she is always ready, willing, and able to lend a hand, and smile to you! Heddy manage CLLC’s homestays program which provide quality care for students studying abroad. Heddy is able to draw upon her personal experience with hosting students to manage the program and ensure consistent support for both students and families
