Overview

CLLC's EFL Program:
Our EFL curriculum consists of General English, TOEFL, Business English, and Academic Bridging Programs to prestigious universities and colleges in Nova Scotia such as Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University, NSAC, NSCC, and Saint Mary’s University, which are some of the best educational institutions in Canada.
There are seven levels in our general English program, ranging from introductory to advanced. Our programs are divided into reading and writing , and listening and speaking. Our program focuses on high-interest thematic material, using integrated skills. The goal of all of our classes is to build language confidence, fluency, and accuracy in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

The Final 45: Study EFL that’s right for you!

Learning English as a foreign language is challenging, with many, many areas of specialty to learn. The Final 45 gives students at CLLC the opportunity to choose subjects and skills that interest them the most. This will allow students of English as a foreign language to get exposure in special areas of interest that have their own, often unique words, idioms and expressions. Every two weeks the teachers, students, and classes change, so we all get the chance to study together and to get to know each other even better. It’s a fantastic way to meet new friends, and to get to know all of our wonderful teachers! In addition, it enables students to focus on the skills they most need to improve. Most importantly, it is a fun, creative, and interactive way to end the school day!

 Our Schedule:

Combines a strong academic program with a flexible and interactive activities schedule that offers access to over 40 hours of classroom and activity time.

  • 25 hours per week of classroom instruction.

  • Access to 17 hours per week of English activities outside of school, putting your English to use.

  • Highlighted points in yellow represent the activity time period available to students in this academic schedule.  The specific times for the daily activities will vary from day to day.  Please refer to our activity board in school upon arrival.

CLLC Classes timetable 1:

Our levels are linked to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, which allows each student the ability to measure progress and improvement through the levels.

 Canadian Language Benchmarks:

English Only Policy

CLLC has a strictly enforced English Only Policy. If a student speaks his or her native language unintentionally, he or she will be asked to do extra work at home, such as grammar exercises for lower level students, or an essay for higher level students. If a student speaks his or her native language intentionally, he or she will be asked to leave school for the remainder of the day and the following day. If the English Only Policy is broken five times by the same student, he or she will be asked to leave CLLC.
  Attendance Policy:
CLLC expects students to attend school everyday. Attendance is recorded on a daily basis and is worth 25% of a student’s mark on our Monthly Evaluation Reports. If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late, he or she will be asked to wait until the following period to join the class. Failure to attend class, or regularly being late for class, will result in poor marks, which could lead to being expelled from CLLC.
Monthly Evaluation Reports:
Monthly Evaluation Reports are given out at the end of each month. They are calculated on attendance, weekly test results, and homework. They give positive feedback and reinforcement for improved progress, and suggestions on how to overcome language obstacles. If a student receives two consecutive failing grades, he or she may be asked to leave CLLC.
  Graduation Certificates:
CLLC graduates receive a certificate stating the number of weeks spent at our school, and the level achieved in that time. The student's overall grade is also included on the graduation certificate.
Graduation Ceremony:
As part of our flexible enrolment policy, we have new students arriving every Monday, and graduating students leave every Friday. We celebrate the graduating students by organizing a weekly graduation ceremony in which the teachers present the students with their certificates, followed by a multimedia slideshow with photos and video from the student's time spent in Halifax.
  Testing:
We use tests, quizzes, and exams as a way for teachers’ to assess students’ comprehension and progress and to give weekly feedback to our students. They are not designed to create competition or animosity among our students. We have a Listening and Speaking quiz every Thursday afternoon, and a Reading and Writing quiz every Friday morning.
